RJA #15b: Reflection on What You Learned

In this class I have learned how to use different websites and keep well orgainzed when researching. I have found that delicious and bloging my websites are very useful when researching becaue it is right there to access when you are writing you paper. I have also learned how to use other search engines to my advantage which makes researching 100% easier. I have learned how to use search strings also. I never really knew that typing in capitals and symbols can widen a search. I have learned a lot of new ideas and organization to writing a research paper in your class. I know that the tools you have used in your class will help me in the future for other classes.

RJA #12a: Progress Report

1. I have written most of my rough draft paper.
2. I still need to fix and add to some paragraphs.
3. I also need to choose what sources to use and add them to my paper.
I have picked out sources to use, but I am trying to make sure those will fit nicely with my thoughts and ideas.
-I need to cite my resources.
-I need to complete MLA style work cited page.

In the next week I will be adding to my paper and choosing the last of my sources to use. I will then start to site them as I use them in my paper.
After I have finally finished my rough draft paper I will re-read and check to make sure my sources are cited correctly.

RJA #11b: Visual Aids

-The history of the death penalty
-The types of death penalty
-Families on death row
-The sides of each family
-Cost of puttin someone to death.

RJA #11a: Introduction

The death penalty is considered to be one of the most controversial issues when it refers to punishment. The death penalty has many pros and cons about justice but it may not be just to everyone. There are many people who believe that the death penalty should be used when it comes to capital punishment. There are some people who believe that the death penalty is a cruel and unusual method and should be abolished completely when it comes to punishment.

RJA #10b: Argument

Precise claim:
The death penalty gives justice to those who have done wrong, but can violate their rights and hurt their loved ones which is unjust.

Reason 1
- The death penalty shows justice towards the loved ones who suffered from the wrong doings of those who are tried and sentenced to the death penalty.
Warrant- Those families who have been victimized by other family members murdered or raped have peace when they now that person who did it is dead or paying for they did.

Reason 2- The death penalty also shows justice towards society for the wrong doings of the one who was sentenced to the death penalty.
Warrant- Commit the crime do the time.

Reason 3- The death penalty can also be unjust because the one who was sentenced is not the only one who has to go through his death. That person may also have family members and friends and now they have unhappiness and have to suffer.
Warrant- It is not just one family or person that is suffering now it is two. If the person who was sentenced was sentenced for murder then two people will be dead instead of two and both families suffer from loss.

Reason 4- Our civil rights ensure us of no cruel or unusual punishment.
Warrant- Putting someone to death by electrocution hanging lethal injectin is inflicting cruel and unusual punishment. Who is anyone to say that lethal injection does not hurt there will never be any proof because the person who is injected can not tell you if they are dying.

The law saws that murder is murder but is that what the death penalty is, murder?

RJA #10a: Thesis Statement

Research Question:
Why should the death penalty be used what are the pros and the cons of the death penalty? How would the death penalty be unjust to those facing the death row?

Precise claim:
The death penalty gives justice to those who have done wrong, but can viloate their rights and hurt their loved ones which is unjust.

Reasons/Blueprint:
The death penalty keeps offenders off the streets for good and creates more room in the prison systems.
The death penalty can be unjust to the one who was sentenced to the death penalty becuase our eitght adementment right states that we shall not have any cruel or unusual punishment inflicted on us. The death penalty can be a form of cruel and unusual punishment by the forms used to put one to death.

Thesis Statement:
The death penalty has many pros and cons about justice but it may not be just to everyone.

RJA #9: Evaluation of Sources

This article is catches my attention. It is for the death penalty and has a lot of helpful informatin. This article is valid. It does not have too much information and not too little either. This will be an excellent source to use for my paper. It states how deciding weather or not to use the death penalty and the causes and effects of choosing.

Hugo Adam Bedau and others. "Reasonable Doubts: The Growing Movement Against the Death Penalty." American Prospect Vol. 15 No. 7 July 2004: A1-A23. SIRS Researcher. Web. 14 October 2009.

This article may be useful in writing my paper. It has many questions that you might think of about the death penalty and some resonable answers. This article is vaild by opinion and edventually states the facts.

Unknown. "The Death Penalty: Questions and Answers." Amnesty International 01 Apr 2007: n.p. SIRS Researcher. Web. 14 October 2009.

This article states both sides of the death penalty which is great for research so see what each side of the story is told and what is being said. It has vaild informaitn with many supporting facts.

Internet Research Project

MIDDLE SPOT
http://middlespot.com/search.php

Summary or Description of the Tool

The website middlespot.com is fun and easy to use. This website was created to have easy functions to keep your web searching organized. Middle spot has a search bar where you begin searching. It has options to keep your search to what you are looking for. For example it has options for web, images, news, amazon, and twitter. When typing in your search you would click one of the following to receive the correct information to your related search. When entering your search you can also enter the number of results you would like displayed. When you enter your search your search results display in text on the right, and in portrait or screen shots on the left. This is very useful because when clicking on either the screen shot or the text it will highlight both of the items. For example if you had your mouse on a screen shot it would highlight the text that is related to that screen shot. When using this option you can make the screen shot bigger by using the screen shot zoom tool or your mouse scroll wheel. You can also make your search easier by modifying the number of columns to look through the screen shots.

Strengths

The strengths of Middle Spot is that you can see multiple results of you searches. They are right there for you to see and read not just read. This is a great what to research because sometimes pictures capture your eyes faster then words. This website also allows you to keep track of what you have searched by using a mash tab. This is great so that you do not have to have 5 different websites open that are keeping track of your information. It is right there to save and continue researching. Middle Spot also has a dash board to keep track of the recent searches you have conducted.

Weaknesses

I have not found any weaknesses to Middle Spot in my opinion. I think that this website is really neat and easy to use.

Search engines, directories, and other applications searched

Middle Spot has the option to click on web, images, news, amazon, and twitter. This is a great way to modify your search. Middle Spot is a great way to keep your search organized while saving and sharing information.Operators

Databases

Middle Spot does use google. When doing a search at the bottom of the screen it will show google and other related topics to what you have typed in.

Operators

Like other search engines you can use AND, OR + - to help modify your search.

Case sensitivity

When using Middle Spot I have not found that it reflects anything on the search when using lower cases or upper cases.

Limits

Some limits are that the many results are found. This is a result to having such a large database. Middle Spot uses a huge amount of resources to obtain information for a search.

Advanced search function

Using advanced search functions for Middle Spot would be by using the button for web, image, news, amazon, and twitter. Another way would be to use the google search at the bottom of the page.

Sorting

Has a dash board function to control what sites you have been searching. It also has mash tabs which is used like our delicious account. You can save the websites you want to come back too by using the mash tabs.

Display

The display on this website is great. It is easy to understand. It does not make it difficult to find information or to receive it. If you have a question it can be easily answered because the help button is visible. When researching it is easy to use because of how everything is modified and displayed to see and read the results shown from your search.

Help function

The help function is great for Middle Spot. There is a slide show to explain and demonstrate how everything works and is used on Middle Spot. If you have any questions or are not sure on using a particular item go to the main page of Middle Spot and click on advertise. This link has the answer. You can also read the tutorials which are a link on the same page as the advertise button.

Special features

Has a work pad. This is an option in which it allows you to save and control your results into clusters that are called work pads. Using work pads you can comment on your work to remind you or just note extra information. You can also share your work pads with friends or use them for work. You can email your work pads to anyone. You can also use your work pads from any computer as long as you create or have a Middle Spot account.

There is a little link called tips when you are searching. This tells you small tips to make it easier on using Middle Spot when researching.

RJA #7c: Field Research Plan

For my field research I am planning on doing a survey. I want to conduct a survey of 100 people asking them:
Are you for or agianst the death penalty?
Do you think the death penalty is a reliable way for punishment?
What could be changed about the death penalty?
What crimes committed do you think should get the death penalty?
Is there a difference between life sentence and the death penalty?
In your own words please write why you are for or against the death penalty?
I am planning to do this by the end of October.

I am also thinking about going to a police station to survey cops on their thoughts about the death penalty.
My questions would be
Are you for or agianst the death penalty?
Do you think the death penalty is a reliable way for punishment?
What could be changed about the death penalty?
What crimes committed do you think should get the death penalty?
Is there a difference between life sentence and the death penalty?
In your own words please write why you are for or against the death penalty?
Have you ever seen somebody get executed by the death penalty? Seeing this, did it change your aspect or thoughts on the death penalty?
If I do choose to carry out this survey I also want it completed by the end of October.

In completeing these surveys I hope to gain information on the cops point of veiw against the publics point of veiw on the death penalty.

RJA #7a: Internet Research Tools

I use google, SIRS, EBSCO for most of my research.

The thing I like most about google is that by typing in key words it has several articles or information to choose from. Google also takes key words and uses them as links to broaden your search. www.google.com

I love SIRS. I think that this data base is great. It has so many options to help with research. Newspaper articles, Journals, Magazine Articles, and so much more to gain research. SIRS offers so many choices to pick your research from which is really helpful. www.sirs.com (have to have log in)

EBSCO works a lot like SIRS. I like that it is easy to use and is very helpful when looking for certain topics.

RJA #5a: Finding Reference Articles

I found a timeline of events of the death penalty which may become very useful when writing my paper. This information really breaks it down and explains what has happend.

http://sks.sirs.com

ProQuest Staff. "Capital Punishment Timeline." Leading Issues Timelines 2009: n.p. SIRS Researcher. Web. 20 September, 2009.

To find this information I typed in death penalty+time line. Date accessed. 9-20-09

I looked up religous aspects of the death penalty and found some good information but I want to decide on which aspects I want to include. I typed in relgion AND death penalty. I found that their are many different aspects of the death penalty and some use it a lot more then the US. It is also used more harsh then in the US. Like beheading.

I found infomation on juveniles being on death row. This information is interesting because it rises the question on if a child or someone who is under the age of 18 be sentenced to death row? I found that in the US the death penalty has been abolished for juveniles. I also found cases about juveniles who have been on death row. I typed in Juvenile+Death row

RJA #3c: Developing a Research Question

Should the death penalty be legal?

When should the death penalty be used?

What are the pros and the cons through the history of the death penalty?

Can the death penalty be just or unjust to those who are sentenced to death row why and why not?

How could the death penalty be used better in our soicety?

Should the death penalty be used as it is today why or why not?

Why should the death penalty be used and what are the pros and cons of the death penalty? How would the death penalty be unjust to those who are sentenced to death row?

What are some of the biggest problems with the death penalty?

My goal for writing about the death penalty is to share information. I want to learn about the death penalty so that I can decide if I am for or agianst it. I also want to see if using the death penalty would be a better advantage then using the prision system since we spend so much money on them.

My audience is for people who are interested in learning more about the death penalty. This could also be for criminal justice majors who are learning and need to know more about the death penalty.

RJA #3b: Narrowing Research Topic

Using chapter 3 in our Wadsworth Guide to Research I found that I may need to narrow but broaden my research. For my audience and myself I want to make sure that I include as much history and background knowlege of the death penalty as I can. It is important to make sure that the audience is interested and is gaining something from reading my potential paper. I need to give information not only on the death penalty itself but the pros and cons of the death penalty. This is where I might need to broaden my research and my paper not to focus on just the death penaltys pros and cons but the whole picture of the of why we use the death penalty. I also need to make sure that my paper is very well organized so that my readers do not get lost or confused by the timeline of events. I need to make goals and plan what I want and do not want in my paper. I plan to do this by making a list of all events of the death penaltys pros, cons and other information and selecting the top 10 that most interesting to me. I will then keep this list just in case I change my mind on a line of history or need more ideas to complete my paper.

RJA #3a: Exploring Research Topic

I researched the cost of the death penalty, crimes in which are appacable to death row and how many people are on death row in the US. I found that the cost of death row is more expensive then using the prison system. I also learned that each state has different limitations to be charged with death row. Here is a website that shows what the costs are for death row. http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A397034
I aslo found that one can research on who is on death row in each state. I aslo found that there are websites containing the pros and the cons of death row.

RJA #2C Delicious Account

RJA # 2B Research Topic

I decided to do my research project on the death penalty. I chose do to the death penalty because it is a very interesting but very controversial. The death penalty is subject that is hard to pick a side on which it should or should not be used. I am undecided on if the death penalty should be used. I thought that this topic would be a good decision because if I do more research on the topic then I can come to a conclusion if I can agree or disagree with the death penalty.

There are many things that I still know about the death penalty. The death penalty has been around for hundreds of years. There are many different ways to put someone to death when it comes to the death penalty. In the old days hanging used to be a way to put someone to death. Now they use lethal injection or the electric chair. Not every state has the death penalty in the United States. I know that it is very costly to use the death penalty. I know that there are many controversies on the death penalty like all convicted rapeist and murders should get death penalty. Another controversy is bargaining to keep the death penalty off of the table for in return information between the defense and prosecution teams.

There are many things that I do not know about the death penalty. How many people have died off of the death penalty? Why does it cost so much to use the death penalty and less to keep them alive in our prison systems? How many total states in the US have the death penalty? Which state in the US has the highest number of people who have been put to death? I want to learn how families react to their loved ones getting put to death. How does family members of the one who is on death row feel? Does the death penalty really have a purpose in our system? If it does how does it work better or worse then our prison system. What happens when someone makes a mistake but has already been put to death even know they were innocent? I want to learn how many countries use the death penalty as a form of punishment. I also want to learn what is their form of punishment for example if they use hanging or something else.
